To investigate the effects of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs NSAIDs ; on thyroid tests, 25 healthy subjects underwent a single-dose study and or a 1-wk study. In the singledose study, subjects received a single dose of one of six NSAIDs aspirin, salsalate, meclofenamate, ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin ; at 0800 h. Total and free thyroid hormones and TSH were analyzed 0, 1, 2, 3, and 8 h later. In the 1-wk study, subjects received one of six NSAIDs for 7 d. Thyroid hormones and TSH were analyzed at 0800 h each day. Total T4 and total T3 were measured by RIA, free T4 and free T3 were measured by equilibrium dialysis, and TSH was measured by immunometric assay. There were no changes in any hormones after a single dose or 1 wk ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin. Single-dose aspirin or salsalate decreased, whereas meclofenamate increased, various total and free thyroid hormone measurements. One week of aspirin or salsalate decreased total T4, free T4 salsalate only ; , total T3, free T3, and TSH. These data confirm that aspirin, salsalate, and meclofenamate affect total and free thyroid hormone measurements and identify three NSAIDs that did not change thyroid tests. TSH remained within the normal range during acute or 1-wk administration of all of the NSAIDs. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 88: 5710 5716.

James Belarmino, Michael E. Moran, Farzeen Firoozi, Seth Capello Efrossini A. Kolios, Michael Perrotti Albany, NY USA Introduction and Objective: Nikola Tesla is perhaps the least known geniuses of our era, yet during his own time, he was singled-out as perhaps the sentinel minds by his peers. He is the inventor of many of the electronic systems currently in use throughout the world. He formatted the AC current, patented the first AC engine, dynamo, turbine, and a host of purely electrical apparatus. He was the first to investigate plasmas, particle-beam weapons, radio communication, electromechanical propagation, terrestrial heating and power generators, oceanic thermal conversion, X-rays and others things. One of his least known devices was a remote-controlled, electronic robotic underwater submersible usable in armed conflicts. This is an investigation into Tesla and his unique robotic device. Methods: Tesla was an incredibly secretive individual but there exists extensive writing by and about him. We were able to gather extensive details including photos of Tesla and his intriguing radiocontrolled robot. This, plus his patent are readily available for students of robotics to investigate. Results: Tesla was much influenced by war torn Yugoslavia, his homeland and had a significant interest in electronic instruments that might remove humanity from the risks of injury during war. Tesla had exhaustively prepared for the first Electrical Exhibition at Madison Square Garden, but the proceedings were overshadowed by the onset of the Spanish-American War. On that fateful day in 1898, Tesla demonstrated more than the public could possibly absorb. His first two radio-controlled devices were boats, one that could subsurface. In one afternoon, Tesla had demonstrated the future of modern guided weapons, vehicles, the automated industrial manufacturing, and robotry but no one present understood any of these concepts. Conclusions: In biographies about Tesla, Commander E.J. Quinby, USN Retired is quoted as follows: "I was there with my father, quite fascinated, but also quite unaware that I was witnessing the dawn of space navigation to be realized later, in the following century." The inventor did not disclose more than his fundamental idea in his patent No. 613, 809, a technique he had developed to protect his ideas from his competitors, especially Edison. His robotic submarine was entirely autonomous, it included six 14foot torpedoes which were arrayed vertically in two rows so that as one discharged, another would fall into place. In Tesla's own words, he claimed that "such a ship attack and destroy a whole armadadestroy it utterly in an hour, and the enemy would never have a sight of their antagonists or know what power destroyed them.

Usually, a well balanced diet consisting of fruits and vegetables will provide sufficient vitamins and minerals for both mother and baby. However, some women become anaemic during pregnancy and their doctor may prescribe iron tablets to help restore an adequate supply of healthy red blood cells. Folic acid should be taken by women contemplating pregnancy for at least one month before conception and for the first three months of pregnancy to help prevent the occurrence of neural tube defects e.g. spina bifida ; . These tablets are available from your local.
Turnaround of the Year awards The TMa awards program got an added boost to its visibility in the corporate world by adding a new category for 2005 Transaction of the Year. The coveted Turnaround of the Year categories typically involve operational turnarounds, as well as financial restructuring and auranofin.
Conclusions: If we compare both groups, distance of embryo deposition upper or lower 15 mm from uterine fundus, we observe signicant differences in number of transferred embryos and endometrial thickness in transfer day, but not in pregnancy and implantation rates. We concluded the depth of deposition of embryos at a distance 15 mm from the uterine fundus does not signicantly increase the pregnancy and implantation rates, but we found best results by this methods. We would argue that embryos should be transferred further from the fundus 15 mm ; . P-335. Does endometrial thickness predict ICSI outcome? Isikoglu M. and Ozgur K. Antalya IVF Center, Antalya IVF Center, Antalya, Turkey Introduction: Various aspects of endometrium have been studied for the prediction of implantation and pregnancy rates and pregnancy outcome in ART cycles. Morphological studies including thickness, volume and pattern on day of HCG administration or earlier have been investigated and they reveal conicting results in terms of predicting ART and pregnancy outcomes. We performed a prospective study to determine whether the endometrial thickness on day of HCG administration En 1 ; , 12 days after embryo transfer En 2 ; and En 2En 1 are predictive of pregnancy outcome in ICSI cycles. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 118 patients enrolling in an ICSI programme. Endometrial thickness was assessed by transvaginal high resolution sonography Siemens Siena, Germany ; using 7.5 MHz transducer by one operator. By sweeping the transducer from one lateral fornix to the other, thickness of the endometrium was measured at mid-sagittal plane while both the fundal and the cervical ends of the uterus were imaged on the screen. HCG assay was done 12 days after embryo transfer following En 2 measurement. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Student's t-test and Mann Whitney tests were used for the statistical analyses. ROC curves were applied when appropriate. Results: Endometrial thicknesses were measured precisely in 107 patients. In total, 11 Patients were discarded because of indenite endometrial borders on TvUSG image. Clinical pregnancy rate was 55.1% 59 107 ; . Five patients had miscarriages. All other pregnancies are ongoing. En 1, En 2 and En 2En 1 values for pregnant versus nonpregnant women were 11.8 T 2.4 mm versus 12.0 T 2.0 mm P 0.66 ; , 18.3 T 4.7 mm versus 14.2 T 3.7 mm P 0.05 ; and 2.61 T 0.37 mm versus 4.46 T 0.58 mm P 0.05 ; , respectively. En 2 and En 2En 1 values were signicantly greater for the pregnant women P 0.05 ; . En 1, En and En2En1 were all similar for ongoing and lost pregnancies P 0.42, 0.96 and 0.65, respectively ; . According to ROC curve, an En 2En 1 value of 3.75 mm assures 74.6% sensitivity and 70% specicity for predicting pregnancy. Conclusion: Although En 2 and En 2En 1 are useful for predicting pregnancy, neither can be used for predicting miscarriages in ICSI pregnancies. Larger prospective studies are needed for clarication of this issue. P-336. Prednisone plus low-dose aspirin in women with no autoimmune conditions undergoing ICSI Mollo A., Varricchio M.T., Strina I., Alviggi C., D'Uva M., Pisapia I., Ranieri A., Amato V., Lubrano Lobianco C. and De Placido G. Universita `Federico II' Napoli, Ginecologia e Med. della Riproduzione, Napoli, Italy Introduction: Despite advances in ART, the implantation rate after IVF and ICSI remains low, at around 1525%. Furthermore, many successful conceptions after ART are lost within the rst trimester. The mechanism of generation of uterine receptivity and the maintenance of implanted concepti are still not completely understood. Immune effector cells and cytokines may play a role in reproductive outcome. Higher levels of Thelper-1 Th-1 ; cytokines [interferon-g INFg ; , interleukin IL ; -2, IL-12 and the tumor necrosis factor-b TNF-b ; ] are associated with recurrent.

Gether, the totality of evidence suggests these are independent noninteractive risk factors. Summary. In summary, our prospective data from apparently healthy U.S. physicians are consistent with previous findings that plasma fibrinogen is associated with risk of coronary heart disease, independent of other risk factors including total to HDL cholesterol ratio and aspirin treatment. Our results suggest that aspirin can reduce the risk of MI by 32% to 45% through the whole range of fibrinogen levels. We have previously constructed strains containing a null allele for either or both the PSD1 and PSD2 genes 2, 3, 29 ; . The original characterization of these strains showed that either the psd1 or the psd2 strain remained prototrophic for ethanolamine and retained some PtdSer decarboxylase activity, whereas the double mutant was an ethanolamine auxotroph with no measurable PtdSer decarboxylase activity. The psd1 psd2 strain, like pss1 cho1 mutants, could be rescued with either ethanolamine or choline 3, 8 ; . Because either nutrient could rescue cells that lacked the de novo aminoglycerophospholipid synthetic pathway, it was concluded that most probably PtdCho and not PtdSer or PtdEtn was essential for cell growth 4 ; . However, the current studies and recent work by Birner et al. 10 ; demonstrate that the psd1 strain is an ethanolamine prototroph in glucose medium, and that this strain becomes auxotrophic for ethanolamine at 37 C when cultured on nonfermentable carbon sources such as lactate. To determine the reason for the conditional ethanolamine autotrophy in the psd1 strain, we first analyzed its ability to synthesize the aminoglycerophospholipids via the de novo pathway using [3H]serine incorporation. Under all conditions the incorporation of radiolabel into PtdEtn was decreased to the same extent. Therefore, decreased Psd2p activity does not and avandamet.
