The goal of this study was to determine the influence of contrast on the response properties of neurons in ferret primary visual cortex. We show that neurons in primary visual cortex of the ferret exhibit contrast-invariant orientation tuning, as assessed by measures of Gaussian half-width at half-maximum response. Contrast does, however, influence the structure of orientation-tuning curves, as measures of circular variance decrease with increasing contrast. A similar effect of contrast on circular variance has been described in a recent preliminary report for neurons in monkey V1 Shapley et al. 2002 ; indicating that this property of visual processing is shared across species. In the ferret, we show that the change in CV is driven by an increase in preferred orientation activity at high contrast and is not related to changes in orientation-tuning bandwidth or changes in activity at null orientations. We also show that V1 neurons in ferret display a contrast-dependent rightward shift in the high temporal-frequency stimuli that elicit a half-maximum response. While past efforts have suggested that this contrast-dependent shift could rely on intracortical mechanisms Carandini et al. 1997; Kayser et al. 2001 ; , results from the present study show that the degree of shift experienced by cortical neurons is similar in magnitude to that of LGN neurons. Thus, the effect of contrast on temporal-frequency tuning in ferret cortex appears to reflect the response profiles of feed-forward inputs from the thalamus. Finally, our results demonstrate a significant increase in the contrast-dependent phase advance of cortical neurons compared to LGN neurons. In the following sections, we discuss the paradoxical findings of contrast-invariant orientation tuning and contrast-dependent changes in circular variance; we also consider potential neural mechanisms to account for the effects of contrast on cortical responses.

Closer studies with selected species are now under way, especially a Phormidium type is in focus for the moment. The algae used in our laboratory were isolated from a Norwegian fiord and brought into pure culture. Biomass for extraction was produced photosynthetically in 10 litre reactors, with seawater based Z8 medium. The cells were collected by centrifugation and homogenized by sonication. Then the homogenate was extracted with an organic solute and used in the effect studies. We have investigated the effect of such preparations on Matrix Metalloproteases MMP ; from ventricle biopsy material by gelatine zymography. Data show protease inhibition, both of ventricle tissue material activity and of pure gelatinase activity. Gelatine zymography also shows protease activity in the algal preparations themselves. The further strategy to study this protease activity involves invasion- and viability assays, growth of spheroids on collagen gel and confrontation of normal- and cancer cells, using confocal laser scanning microscope for observation. Different growth conditions of the algae will be used for possible optimization of bioactivity, and the isolation and identification of the active molecules are the ultimate goals. New Federally Funded Research Program Aims to Improve Survival from Cardiac Arrest and Severe Trauma "Surviving traumatic injury and cardiac arrest is a serious public health issue. Tens of thousands of Americans die each year from sudden cardiac arrest and trauma. The good news is that there is a growing body of research -- basic research and small studies -- that suggests a significant number of these people can be saved.
The concept of "g" of activity originated from the situation where the antibiotic preparation selected as the reference standard was thought to consist entirely of a single chemical entity and was therefore assigned a potency of 1000 "g" per mg. In several such instances, as a result of the development of manufacturing and purification methods for particular antibiotics, preparations became available that contained more than 1000 "g" of activity per mg. It was then understood that such preparations had an activity equivalent to a given number of "g" of the original reference standard. Vaccine strains of viruses and circulating strains could partly explain the occurrence of these outbreaks. On a broader perspective, health-care policy makers need to develop locally relevant and practical vaccination policies. An example would be the vaccination of poultry workers in places where avian influenza is endemic. Health authorities should ensure that vaccine supplies are adequate for target populations, especially in unexpected situations where overall vaccine shortage is imminent.63 The logistics of vaccinating target groups in the community and health care institutions ; should be well planned, taking into account contingency measures during pandemic situations. The government's preparedness plan for an influenza pandemic is a good example of this process in action.64 Frontline doctors and health care workers should realise the importance of being vaccinated, not only for personal protection, but also for the protection of patients. In addition, those working in primary care could further promote vaccine uptake in the community by providing adequate information and provision of vaccination, especially to at-risk populations and ferret.
