Animals. All animal use procedures were in strict accordance with institutional guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals at Johns Hopkins University. Transgenic C57BL 6 mice heterozygous for BDNF deletions were obtained from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Dallas, TX ; Liebl et al., 1997 ; . These mice were bred to obtain heterozygous BDNF , wild-type WT ; breeding pairs. These breeding pairs were bred to produce BDNF , pups. Mice were genotyped by PCR 94C for 30 sec, 59C for 15 sec, and 72C for 30 sec ; using DNA obtained from tail clippings. BDNF primer sequences are GGCGCCGAACCCTCATAGACAT, GACACTTTTGAGCACGTCATCGAAG, and CGCCTTCTTGACGAGTTCTTCTG. T issue preparation. BDN F and W T pups destined for immunohistochemistry were taken at postnatal day 0.5 P0.5 ; and decapitated. Incisions were made from the front of the cranium to the base of the skull. The heads were then placed in either 4% paraformaldehyde PFA ; in 0.1 M PBS, pH 7.4, or Bouins' fixative overnight. For cryosectioning, tissues were then washed three times in PBS for 1 hr each, cryoprotected by incubating overnight with consecutive concentrations of sucrose 10 and 20% ; in PBS, frozen in optimal cutting temperature compound, and stored at 70C until cryostat sectioning at 20C. For paraffin sections, tissue was washed as described above, dehydrated to 75% ethanol, and stored at 20C until it was sent out for commercial preparation of sections. Primar y culture of OR Ns. Primary olfactory neurons were prepared from neonatal rats as described previously Ronnett et al., 1991 ; with few modifications. The tissue cultured was from 1- to 2-d-old W T rat pups. SUSTEN AND AVANELLE KIRKSEY Foods and Nutrition Department, Purdue University, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana 47907 ABSTRACT Massive doses of pyridoxine 100 mg 100 g body weight ; were admin istered to nonpregnant and pregnant intact and adrenalectomized rats to determine whether alterations in tyrosine tr ansa minase activity TTA ; and holotyrosine transaminase activity HTA ; could be produced and whether heresponses differed in pregnant and nonpregnant states. Observations were made 5 hours after intraperitoneal injections of saline, Cortisol or pyridoxine. Hepatic HTA tended to be higher and TTA was higher in saline-treated pregnant than in nonpregnant animals. Sim ilar enzyme responses were observed in cortisol-treated animals compared with saline treated controls. Pyridoxine administration caused apparent stimulation of TTA and HTA in intact animals, but no increases in the enzyme activities were observed in similarly treated adrenalectomized rats. Similarities between the enzyme responses observed following pyridoxine administration and those following tyrosine administra tion are discussed in relation to age dependency. Increased TTA and HTA were ob served only in fetuses from rats treated with pyridoxine, suggesting that the mecha nism of stimulation of the enzyme by pyridoxine may be operative in fetal liver and flolan

R. solani was isolated from 30 wild plant specimens representing 12 species from potato fields in the Netherlands, viz. Capsella bursa-pastoris L. ; Medik., Cirsium arvense L. ; Scop., Elytrichia repens L. ; Nevski, Fumaria officinalis L., Geranium molle L., Lolium perenne L, Matricaria recutita L., Polygonum aviculare L., Polygonum convolvulus L., Polygonum persicaria L., Solanum nigrum L. and Stellaria media L. ; Cirillo Jager et al., 1982 ; . Retrieval of R. solani from the weeds varied from 1.3 to 11.9 %. Of these isolates, 62 % proved to be pathogenic to potato sprouts. Some weed species seemed more frequently colonised by R. solani than others, particularly S. nigrum, E. repens and M. recutita. In a separate survey in Colorado, Oshima et al. 1963 ; found the weeds, Amaranthus retroflexus L., Chenopodium album L., Chenopodium barlandieri L. and Portulaca olerecea L. collected from potato fields, to be frequently invaded by Rhizoctonia spp.

Reports of efficacy have been published. On balance, these may reflect lack of attention to sufficient reducing substance ascorbate ; to enhance toxic mineral mobilization and excretion while maintaining the more effective reduced form of d-penicillamine rather than it's disulfide. An additional factor that reduces toxic mineral mobilization is metabolic cellular acidosis. Correction of magnesium buffering deficit aids directly by displacement ; and indirectly by correcting cellular acidosis ; the enhanced toxic mineral mobilization. Magnesium, as the second most prevalent mineral inside mammalian cells, is a major contributor to cellular acidosis33. The toxicity of d-penicillamine has been described based on its use for several indications in both adults and children. Toxicity of the racemic mixture used years ago to treat chronic arthritis in adults may account for the severity of some of these symptoms and should never be used. In children, nausea and vomiting appear more often at doses exceeding 60 mg. Kgm. per day and may respond to a decrease in dosage34. This protocol uses 30 mg. Kgm. doses for just three 3 ; days for provocation. When given daily and for prolonged periods which we never recommend ; adverse blood and skin effects seem to be idiosyncratic hypersensitivity reactions and are not dose related. Reversible leukopenia or mild thrombocytopenia is reported in less than 10% of children in.
