In 1972, researchers at the Naval Medical Reseach Unit Number 2 stationed in Taipei, Taiwan, and the National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan, studied cesium-137 Cs-137 ; turnover rates in humans. A family of five participated in the study. The members of the family were a forty-year-old male, a thirty-nine year old female, and three male children, twelve, ten, and six years old. The family had lived in a home where radioactive contamination was detected. A one gram cesium chloride source, purchased from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and dispensed by a medical doctor, had been stored in a lead-shielded container in a corner of the family's kitchen for more than ten years. During that time, the house was flooded twice by water. As a result, the container corroded and leaked, allowing contamination to spread throughout the house and surrounding grounds. After the source was discovered, it was removed and the area decontaminated. Initial Cs-137 body burdens in family members were estimated by whole-body counting. Arrangements were then made to follow the turnover rates of Cs-137 in the family members by periodically estimating their Cs-137 body burden from twenty-four hour Cs-137 urinary excretion and whole-body counting. Data indicated a correlation between the rate of biological turnover and age of the participant.

Specialized skills and knowledge required to safely manage patients' highly technical critical care needs. This situation was exacerbated in our institution by a 2-day BMT education program originally designed for experienced oncology nurses, but evaluated by recently hired staff as inadequate to meet their needs for understanding the basic principles underlying BMT nursing care. This abstract describes the transformation of our institution's BMT nursing education program based on changed needs reported by our newly hired nurses. The educational content of the programs and improvement in evaluation scores will be explained. Nurses' response to the educational programs and the relationship of job satisfaction, performance and retention to education will be discussed. After reviewing program evaluations, our BMT nursing education was changed from a 2-day program offered 2-3 times annually to three sequential programs: a one-day program, the "BMT Core Curriculum", followed by two half-day classes, "Essential BMT Nursing Skills" and "BMT Supportive Care Issues". Each is offered quarterly, and presented by experienced clinicians from our own staff. Educational content and time allotments were further adjusted to meet the specific educational needs of newly hired BMT nursing staff. Newly hired BMT staff nurses' response to these educational programs was overwhelmingly positive, ranking consistently higher on a 1 point Likert scale than the previous programs. In addition, several of our experienced staff subsequently asked to attend, and a review process has been designed by BMT Program leadership to maintain the program's relevance and currency in 2007. The focus and content of our BMT nursing education programs were substantially revised to better meet the expressed needs of our nurses. Further, a periodic review process was implemented to ensure the program continues to evolve with the science of transplantation and feedback of our nursing staff. Similar nursing education programs geared specifically to the needs identified by the target audience could be implemented in other facilities to improve nursing knowledge, skills, satisfaction and retention.
The distinguishing morphological features of R. vannielii are the attachment of the cells by means of a slender, branched filament and the mode of reproduction, which we believe to be by budding rather than fission. Figure 2 illustrates typical cell groups taken from a 7-day-old culture and photographed while suspended in dilute gentian violet. The individual cells at maturity are ovoid in shape with dimensions of approximately 1.2 by 2.8 microns. The connecting filaments vary greatly in length but are uniformly about 0.3 microns in diameter. The electron micrograph shown in figure 3 reveals that a short portion of the filament connecting two mature cells is generally constricted and considerably more opaque to the electron beam than the remainder of the filament. It can be observed that many of the terminal cells of cell groups possess filaments that vary in length from very short protuberances to structures several microns long. The tips of the filaments may be undifferentiated figure 6, left ; or swollen figure 6, right ; to various degrees. We believe that these globose structures at the tips of the filaments are new cells in various stages of development. The size range of the terminal cells is well illustrated in figure 2. Cell multiplication appears to be initiated by the outgrowth of a new filament from the pole of a mature or immature cell, or from some point along a filament connect and ginger.
