Among the children reporting cognitive changes, memory problems are perhaps the most common complaint. This likely reflects the fact that memory problems are among the most easily observable deficits and with the most immediate negative feedback. For example, these children will have difficulty remembering conversations and forget to do chores or will be unable to remember teachers' lectures or to keep track of assignments. It is important to note, however, that attention plays an important role here as well. For example, children who have difficulty paying attention will encode and store less information, and thus report poor "memory" for that information. Neuropsychologists often consider memory as having three components: Encoding--which involves the initial learning of the information and glycopyrrolate.

233. PROLONGTM: PRELIMI NARY REPORT OF A NEW OUTCOMES REGIS TRY FOR PATIENTS TREATED WITH GLIADEL WAFER Beth Lowenth al and the PROLONG Study Group. Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Baltimore, MD Well-controlled clinical trials are critical in establishing the safety and efficacy of new therapies, however, they often do not give a true picture of how a therapy performs when used outside such a controlled setting. PROLONG, an outcomes registry established in 12 01, is designed to capture data on the use of GLIADEL Wafer Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc. ; in clinical practice. In this initial report, data regarding surgical technique and post-operative management is reported. Patients are enrolled at the first post-operative visit and are followed at 3-month intervals until death or loss to follow-up. To date, 42 patients have been enrolled; 30 patients received GLIADEL Wafer at initial surgery and 12 at recurrence. Diagnoses include GBM 32 AA 4 unknown glioma 3 metastatic tumor 2 and gemicytic astrocytoma 1 ; . Patient characteristics include: median age 60 2685 median KPS at surgery 80 30-100 median KPS at first postoperative visit 90 40-100 median hospital LOS 4 days 1-30 ; . Thirty-three patients 78.6% ; underwent GTR of their tumors while 9 21.4% ; had STR. Tumors ranged in size from 2 cm n 2-5 cm n 26 ; to 5-10 cm n 15 ; . median of 8 wafers was implanted with a range of 2-10 wafers. A topical hemostatic agent was used to line the resection cavity in 41 patients 98% ; . To ensure a watertight dural closure, a dural graft was placed in 11 42 26.2% ; and tissue sealant was used following dural closure in 12 42 patients 28.6% ; . Gelfoam was used with replacement of the bone flap in 26 42 patients 61.9% ; . To manage edema, 95% of patients received dexamethasone with total daily doses ranging from 4mg to 120 mg median 16mg ; . On average, steroid taper was begun 3 days post-operatively. Anti-convulsant therapy was given to 83% of patients with phenytoin being the most commonly used agent. The use of the GLIADEL wafer has not significantly changed the post-operative care of patients undergoing craniotomy for and goldenseal.
