Another advantage of using alkaline phosphatase, rather than peroxidase, as the enzyme label is that tissue sections do not require any treatment to remove endogenous enzyme activity. Virus isolation attempts were relatively poor, because IBRV was recovered from only 1 of 67 fetuses tested. In the present study, IBRV was isolated from all fetuses except the 2 that were mummified. The higher success rate may have been influenced by the fact that fetuses were necropsied within 24 hr after abortion, whereas most diagnostic specimens are not usually obtained that quickly. Furthermore, heart blood was tested, whereas it was not included in the field study. In 1 fetus from the present study, IBRV was isolated from blood but not from any of the other tissue samples. Recently a similar result was observed in an aborted fetus that had been refrigerated for 64 hr prior to necropsy. Course of the infection was seen when compared with the control mice.
