Frans de Weger, founder of De Weger, died on 26 September at the age of 92. De Weger played a major role in the post-war reconstruction of the Netherlands, particularly in house building and shipbuilding in the very badly damaged city of Rotterdam. Later he acquired substantial international stature as a designer of large civil engineering structures. Fred van der Veen, member of the Supervisory Board of Royal Haskoning, died suddenly on 30 December. He had held this post for exactly one year, and during this short period he made significant contributions to the work of the Board thanks to his expertise and his knowledge of people. We said goodbye to Jaap Burger in September 2005. Jaap joined the company on 1 February 2000 and he worked in the Maritime division in Nijmegen. Jaap was a capable, honest and amiable colleague who was highly respected inside and outside Royal Haskoning. He was very much appreciated by clients and other consulting firms in the Netherlands and abroad. In him we have lost a seasoned professional, but above all a valued colleague. Jaap contracted motor neurone disease in 2003 and had been ill at home on incapacity benefit since January 2004. Jaap was 55. We also said farewell to Sven Oosterling. Mfdetorres gmail In this paper I intend to discuss the pertinence of the anthropologic perspective for studying the coevolution of our species and the environment. With reference to the current scientific research on climate and climate change, I incorporate the dominant point of view regarding the disembededness of nature from the social relations. It implies excluding the historical perspective, and the lack of sustainability of modern life along with it. This frame of reference reflects well on the expectations of the results of the "human dimension" among climate scientists' interdisciplinary groups, and its political usage. These climate professionals expect to improve the climatic models by introducing the cultural variable into universal and abstract mathematical models. Interpretation frameworks are local and historically determined, also with regard to climate and science cultural representations. My partial conclusions are based on an ongoing ethnographic investigation of families of cattlebreeders in natural grassland, in northern Uruguay. I focus on climate social usage, meaning the way in which some notions circulate among non expert people: climate, science, stochastic certainty. Based on experience with the Koyukon community of Huslia, Alaska, we have found that the long-term planning horizons generally used in climate-change research can be inconsistent with the short-term or temporal immediacy of some Huslia residents.
