On Tuesday evening, November 14, fifth grade students, their parents, and educators came together for their final group meeting to discuss The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Both Millstone River and Village School communities participated in the autumn session of Reading S.E.E.D.S. Stories that Excite Exploration and Discussion to Share ; , a program that encourages sharing and discussion between children and parents on a particular book. At our first meeting held at Village School in October, participants were introduced to the author through video clips as well as given reading strategies and a resource packet presented by Mrs. Frances McDonough and Ms. Cynthia Mershon, the Language Arts Specialists. Everyone then gathered into groups to begin the reading and have some discussion. At our final meeting, children, parents, and facilitators shared viewpoints and thoughts about The Tale of Despereaux and what each derived from the reading. It proved to be a lively discussion with much insightful input from both children and adults. The groups were facilitated by Village School staff, Mrs. Debbie Robl, Mrs. Joanne DeGoria, Mrs. Denise Wilder, Mrs. Sue Garrabrant, and Mrs. Sue Totaro, staff from Millstone River, as well as Mrs. McDonough and Ms. Mershon. We are looking forward to our next Reading S.E.E.D.S. Program in the Spring.

In most patients, plasma chromogranin A CgA ; , serum neuron-specific enolase NSE ; , carcinoembryonic antigen CEA ; , serum calcitonin Ct ; and urine 5-hydroxy-3-indole acetic acid 5-HIAA ; were determined at baseline and at each clinical evaluation. Peripheral blood was collected by venipuncture on the day of therapy prior to drug administration and aliquots of 24 h urine samples were also collected. Patients were instructed not to eat bananas, pineapples or nuts, or drink tea or coffee, and were not to be given drugs containing methyldopa or sympathicomimetic amines at least 3 days before the start of urine sampling. All of the biomarker measurements were carried out by means of immunoenzymatic or immunoradiometric assays as previously described [26]. All assessments were carried out in duplicate and the tested samples were adequately diluted, if necessary.

Upon appeal, the PRRB found that the provider met the regulatory requirements to make an election to bill for physician services on a reasonable cost basis, and that the regulations did not require approval from the Intermediary. Medicaid Fourth Circuit Holds Federal Court Abstention Improper in Medicaid Reimbursement Challenge Seven healthcare providers brought an action in federal district court against the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, challenging the state's method for reimbursement under its Medicaid program. Two of the healthcare providers involved in the federal action had previously commenced state administrative actions challenging their Medicaid reimbursement levels for fiscal years 1996-1998. The district court stayed the action in favor of the state administrative proceedings under the Colorado River abstention doctrine, which allows for abstention in "exceptional circumstances." Colorado River Conservation District v. United States, 424 U.S. 800 1976 ; . However, the Fourth Circuit vacated the district court's stay on the ground that abstention was inappropriate. The appeals court gave the following reasons for its ruling: 1 ; only two of the seven providers were involved in the state proceedings; 2 ; the federal action challenged the state's reimbursement methods over a longer time span than in the state administrative proceedings, which would necessarily bring different issues into play; 3 ; the state administrative appeals were filed after the federal action, and had not substantially progressed; 4 ; the federal action involved issues of federal Medicaid law involving no significant issue of state law; and 5 ; there was no evidence that the state administrative proceedings would bring prompt resolution of the claims.

Animal Studies Spontaneously hypertensive male rats from the Okamoto-Aoki strain were obtained from Charles River Breeding Laboratories Wilmington, Massachusetts ; and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto controls WKY ; from Taconic Farms Germantown, New York ; at 7 weeks of age. They were housed in plastic cages in groups of two to four and fed a pelleted rat diet Teklad, Madison, Wisconsin ; . Systolic BPs were monitored once or twice weekly by a tail-cuff method similar to that described by Williams et al." Groups of SHR were terminated at 10, 15, and 20 weeks to examine the age-related changes in arterial collagen metabolism. Another group of SHR was given alphamethyldopa Aldomet ; daily when they were 12 to 15 weeks of age. Age-matched WKY animals served as controls. Methyldopa was administered by dissolving powdered Aldomet Merck, Sharpe and Dohme, Rahway, New Jersey ; in deionized drinking water at concentrations varying from 2.5 to 5.0 g liter, to overcome drug tolerance and maintain the BP at or near normotensive levels. * Biochemical Studies Rates of collagen synthesis were determined in vitro on descending thoracic aortas consisting of the entire segment between the left subclavian and celiac artery branch points. Loosely adhering periadventitial tissue was quickly removed, and the aortas were incubated for 30 minutes at 37C in 2 ml Earle's bicarbonatebuffered balanced salt solution containing 0.2 mM nonlabeled L-proline. After 5 tCi of [U-14C]-L-proline were added, the tubes were gassed with a mixture of 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide, capped, and incubated for 4 hours. Protein synthesis and further proline hydroxylation were arrested by placing the incubated tissue in 15 ml cold saline containing 100 xg ml of cycloheximidc and 1 mM a, o'-dipyridyl for 10 minutes, followed by two additional rinses in iced saline. Thoracic intima media IM ; was separated completely from the adventitial layer by the dissection method of Wolinsky and Daley.9 Trichloroacetic acid was added to the incubation medium for subsequent determination of proline concentration10 and specific activity of labeled proline in the supernatant after centrifugation. Wet weights of IM were recorded prior to obtaining dry defatted weights after repeated overnight extractions of lipid with acetone: ether 1: ; at 4C. Collagen was then extracted by successive gelatinizations into 2.5 ml of water at 120 for 18 hours and again for 3 hours. Exhaustive dialysis of the pooled extracts against water to remove any labeled free proline and polypeptides with molecular weights lower than 12, 000 was followed by hydrolysis of collagen and other extracted proteins in 6 N HC1 at 120C for 18 hours. Hydrolysates were evaporated to dryness and redissolved in 5 ml water, from which aliquots were removed for determination of hydroxyproline.
