Coordinately regulated sets of genes regulons ; are often controlled by single transcriptional regulators that function as genetic master switches, committing the bacterium to a major alteration in metabolism. In M. tuberculosis, examples of such regulatory mechanisms have been reported recently from studies using genetic approaches, including the dormancy regulon 4 ; and the stringent response 5 ; . The complexity of the cellular transcriptional response to drug-induced stress makes it very difficult to derive this sort of information solely from microarray analysis of a limited number of agents affecting the same metabolic pathway 6, 7 ; . However, by analyzing a wide variety of conditions, groups of genes have been identified that appear co-regulated under many different conditions in yeast 8 ; . In this study, we applied genome-wide expression profiling to diverse environmental changes, including many different drug types, to begin to map the adaptability of the bacilli to interruption of specific arms of metabolism. This allowed us to identify clusters of coordinately regulated genes both diagnostic for drug mechanism of action and useful for a more rational approach to the selection of critical drug targets.

Over 45% of students exhibited balanced learning styles in each dimension. One-third of students agreed or strongly agreed that completing the ILSQ and attending the lecture were valuable 34% and 35% respectively ; . However, more students agreed or strongly agreed that the instructors should continue to administer the ILSQ and teach the learning strategies lecture 52% and 54% respectively ; . Only 9% and 5% of students indicated that these activities should be discontinued. Many students were unable to accurately recall their learning style just seven weeks after taking the ILSQ. Implications: Many students did not perceive value in completing the ILSQ or attending the learning strategies lecture and could not accurately recall their individual learning styles. Despite this, the majority agreed that these activities remain in the course. Revising our current approach to introducing students to different learning styles and strategies is necessary. Important Factors for Student Success in a Multiple Instructor Course. Machelle Davison, University of Oklahoma. Objectives: To identify key factors which make a course with multiple instructors successful. To develop a training program or list of guidelines that course coordinators can use to enhance the success of a course with multiple instructors. Methods: A survey instrument was developed and distributed to all students on both campuses Oklahoma City and Tulsa ; of the University of Oklahoma, College of Pharmacy. The survey represented questions related to items that students felt made a multiple instructor course successful i.e. coordination among lecturers from one subject to another ; . The survey contained ten items ranked on a Likert Scale and four open-ended questions. Results: The majority of students at all levels felt that the top items needed for success in a multiple instructor course included: sample test questions from each lecturer, coordination among lecturers from one subject to another, and learning objectives clearly stated at the beginning of each lecture. An analysis of variance among each class and location of classes revealed differences in responses between campuses i.e. Tulsa second year students ranked the ability to have lecture videos available online for review after each class number one in importance ; . Implications: From the results, guidelines have been developed for courses with multiple instructors and will be used starting Fall 2004. The survey will be administered a second time to evaluate any changes. This study should be replicated by other Colleges of Pharmacy and other Professional Education programs for a clear representation of the outcomes on a national basis. Utilizing Self-Assessment to Foster Self-Learning and Improve Performance-Do Students Perceive Any Value? Tricia Berry, Brenda Gleason, Ashley Butler, St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Objective: To correlate overall course performance with student perceived value of utilizing self-assessment to cultivate self-learning. Methods: Students n 191 ; enrolled in a required introductory professional course in 2003 received instruction on how to use perceptive and insightful self-assessment along with expert-assessment to drive their learning and to improve their performance on course ability outcomes Thinking and Decision-making and Self-Learning ; . Students were required to complete a formal self-assessment on assigned patient case work-ups throughout the course and received expert feedback on these. At the beginning and end of the semester, students were asked to provide reflective responses on their perceived value of the self-assessment process to improve their abilities. The end-semester reflective responses were evaluated and ranked using a 3-point Likert scale 1 not valuable, 2 neutral, 3 valuable ; to ascertain if students who valued the self-assessment process performed better in the course. Results: A total of 188 students provided a reflective response. Of these, 67% found the self-assessment process to be a valuable learning tool. Seventy percent of A and B students valued the self-assessment process compared with 50% of C students p 0.05 ; . Excerpts from student reflective responses will also be shared. Implications: This data was given to students currently enrolled in this introductory professional course to encourage utilization of the self-assessment process to improve performance and take responsibility for their own learning early in their academic career. Instructors gained insight on how to foster self-learning through the self-assessment process for future students. Assessing an Abilities-Based Curriculum. Michael Monaghan, Rhonda Jones, Creighton University. Objectives: Our program adopted an abilities-based curriculum and established 12 terminal educational ability-based outcomes. Multiple choice testing may be inappropriate when evaluating student achievement in such a curriculum. We developed performance-based assessments to measure students' ability to accomplish the program's ability-based outcomes. The purpose of this report was to evaluate the reliability of the first year assessment process. Methods: Faculty teams defined expected outcomes and tasks for each of the 12 ability-based outcomes for the P1 year in the curriculum. These expected outcomes and tasks then became the basis for cases used in designing the P1 performance-based assessment. Faculty drafted 12 cases and corresponding performance criteria used in grading student performance. All cases were validated by a national review panel. The P1 cases were then converted into computer-based simulations for programmatic assessment at the end of the 2003 school year. All P1 students participated in the 12-case assessment in which each case centered on one abilitybased outcome. Two faculty members graded all cases. Spearman's correlation coefficient was calculated to measure the interrater reliability between the two graders; Cronbach's coefficient alpha was calculated to measure the internal consistency of the assessment. Results: Ninety-four students participated in the P1 assessment process. The overall interrater reliability was 0.94; the Cronbach's coefficient alpha was 0.86. Implication: Performance-based assessments produce reliable data that can be used to evaluate an abilities-based curriculum. Evolutionary psychology suggests that a woman's sexual attractiveness is based on cues of reproductive potential. We compared two potential cues of body shape and weight. The conventional measure of female body shape is the waist hip ratio, which has become a major determinant of physical attractiveness. A ratio of 07 a curvaceous body ; is said to be the optimum of attractiveness.13 The waist hip ratio is thought to represent a fat distribution that leads to maximum fertility. However, anorexic women who are amenorrhoeic and, therefore, infertile ; can have the same waist hip ratio as normal women, 2 which suggests that this ratio is not a reliable measure of reproductive potential. We suggest that body-mass index is more closely related to fertility and health than waist hip ratio, 4, 5 and, therefore, should be more important in determination of sexual attractiveness. We studied the relative importance of waist hip ratio compared with body-mass index in the determination of attractiveness among 40 male undergraduates who rated colour images of 50 women in front view.
